Wow, just think, for three easy payments of $66.65 or one payment of $199.95, you too can have an Ab Doer 360 (or damn fancy office chair) to hang your laundry from too.

Why would you hang laundry from this fancy chair masquerading as a piece of fitness equipment you may ask? The answer is simple, you are going to be disappointed with your results from using it in very short order. Once you figure out that you have been had, you are going to put it somewhere where you might want to hang your clean laundry.  Another use would be as an extra chair when you have company over for dinner if you do not have enough to go around. Just be sure Grandma knows that it will tilt in any given direction before she sits in it.

What I find fundamentally wrong about the Ab Doer 360

The marketer of this piece of junk has a video on their advertisement that presents some bold promises that you will achieve the body you want by using it. The only truthful thing I heard was where they offered a book with nutrition information to help you lose even more weight than if you used the chair by itself.

NEWS FLASH!

It does not matter how much abdominal work you might do, if your diet is not on spot, you will never see your abdominal muscles. If you are overweight and considering buying the Ab Doer 360, you had best be prepared to drop your calories to 500 below what your body requires for maintenance. If you do not cut your caloric intake, your tummy is likely to only get larger when the muscle hypertrophy pushes the fat out even more than before. Abdominal muscles are made visible in the kitchen, not in the gym!

The advertisement for the Ab Doer 360 has people in great condition using their product. But you should know that no serious athlete would waste their money on this. There are plenty of great abdominal and core exercises that you can do without wasting $199.95 of your hard earned cash.

Ab Doer 360 claims that you will have a total body transformation  faster than ever before through a full body workout that targets your core. They claim it is going to activate more muscles and will massage you all at the same time! You know what they say about things when they are too good to be true, right?

How does the Ab Doer 360 work?

When you watch the video they have on the advertisement, you will see fit people sitting in these chairs, moving about back and forth, side to side, and doing twisting motions. They claim that by doing the workout they provide you that you will burn more calories and build more muscle fast. As a strength trainer myself, I find these claims to be quite dubious. Yes, you might burn more calories than you would just sitting there like a lump, but you will also burn more calories than a couch potato if you are naturally fidgety.

Core Strength Development for Newbies

The bottom line truth is, if you have never been one to exercise, it is highly unlikely you will remain interested in a wobbly chair to get fit. As for muscle building, this is simply not going to do it for you. It takes hard work to build muscle at any age. If you are out of shape, the Ab Doer 360 is not going to get you even toned, especially if you do not have a corresponding change to healthier nutrition choices that come in below your actual caloric needs to remain at the same body weight.

I tell everyone to always consult with their doctor before beginning any new exercise regiment. And with the Ab Doer 360, I think it may be even more prudent for you to get clearance from your doctor before using one. The reason is, this contraption is not targeted at people who have been serious about physical fitness.

The Ab Doer 360 is designed to appeal to one who wants to begin an easy exercise routine since they are out of shape. If you are overweight and out of shape, all the twisting and bending you would do could be harmful to your back. This would be especially true for anyone who has already had a history of back problems beforehand.

If you are overweight and out of shape, my best advice to you is to save your money. You do not need a wobbly chair in your life. What you need is to begin daily walks with your doctors approval, and to clean up your nutrition. Once you have built up a little endurance, then think about adding simple body weight exercises to your daily walks. There is no need to waste your money.

Lumen Metabolism Tracker Review

Have you seen the Lumen Metabolism Tracker and thought it might be something that would come in handy with your weight loss journey? Do you have an extra $300 US to burn on useless gimmicks that promise to help you optimize your metabolism for fat burning? If you are like most people during this age of the Covid-19 pandemic, you probably don’t.

Scientifically, I am sure this gimmick works as advertised. However…

this is not going to get you to your goals in weight loss!

Yes, you can control your metabolism to a small degree by losing weight and gaining lean muscle mass. You do have some control over your metabolism by making small lifestyle changes by watching what, and how much you eat and exercise. But unless you are doing these things this tracker is NOT going to help you change your metabolism. Additionally, you need to know that any changes you do make to your metabolism are not going to be huge, and the changes will not be enough to allow you to consume as much food as you might desire.

I maintain a very lean body through my nutrition, hard work, and regular exercise that includes  8 hours of strength training and about 3 hours of cardiovascular training each week. You might think just by looking at me that I have a high metabolism, but what you cannot see is the fact I actually do not have a high metabolism. I consume an average of 2,270 calories a day to maintain my current level of body fat and weight. If I increase this by 500 calories per day, I will gain fat on 2,770 calories per day. I know this with absolute certainty simply because I have tried to increase my caloric intake to see what happens. For someone with a very physical job, and who exercises religiously, I have a low metabolism that I cannot manipulate to any great, long lasting degree.

Let me tell you a simple and blunt truth. If you are struggling with your weight and appetite, knowing what your body is burning for energy is not going to help you in any way, shape or form. If you are not struggling with your weight or appetite, this information is not even going to be relevant to you. You have to be willing to make permanent lifestyle choices in order to take off those extra pounds and to be successful at keeping them off. You do not need any gimmicky devices to do this. In order to lose weight, you must have a caloric deficit, meaning that you either must reduce your caloric intake below your total daily energy expenditure or increase your total daily energy expenditure through physical activity.

No matter your body type, the number of calories you need just for your body to function is called your basal metabolic rate, or BMR. If you know your BMR, you can better determine your caloric needs for healthy weight loss.

You burn most of your daily calories with zero effort, movement, or even thinking. Whether you’re sleeping, talking on the phone, working at a keyboard, or simply watching TV, your body is burning calories to keep your organs functioning such as your heart pumping and your lungs breathing. The calories used to maintain these basic bodily functions add up to your BMR.

BMR is one of many factors in the total number of calories you burn in a given day, also called your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). It accounts for roughly 65 to 70 percent of your TDEE, which is determined by genetics, biological sex, age, body size, and lean body mass. While many people blame a slow metabolism (they mean BMR) on weight gain, it’s actually true that increases in body size result in an increase in BMR. The bigger you are, the more calories you are going to need to maintain your weight. The thing is, this is true no matter if you are morbidly obese or muscle bound with little fat. The process to lose body fat is the same for the morbidly obese as it is for one who is just a little over weight. Both individuals will need to reduce their daily caloric intake by 500 in order to lose 1 pound of body fat per week. This can be done by reducing your food intake, or through exercise, or a combination of these two factors.

At rest, a pound of fat burns roughly two calories per day and a pound of muscle burns roughly six calories, however there are a few things you must realize about this. One of the things people do not consider about metabolism is how active a person is, even when they are at rest affects how much they can consume. Fidgety people are constantly moving their body in some manner. Some people are constantly moving during the day, while some are perfectly capable of sitting still while relaxing. The point is, unless you are naturally fidgety, or one to be moving all the time, odds are, you will not become that type of individual just because it will help you to increase your metabolism in order to keep the pounds off of your body. Trying to boost your metabolism probably won’t lead to weight loss, at least not to the degree that changing your diet and lifestyle habits will.

How much you weigh depends on the choices you make about food and how much physical activity you get.

To lose weight, focus on the factors you can control.

  • Calories. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in. There are several ways to reduce the number of calories you eat, including reducing portion sizes; eliminating added sugars and saturated and trans fats. Begin choosing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats instead of processed foods for your daily nutrition. And keep in mind that as you age, you may need to eat even fewer calories. This is because the amount of muscle you have tends to decrease as you get older. Your muscle mass affects how many calories you need because muscle tissue burns calories, even at rest. So having less muscle decreases your calorie needs by decreasing your basal metabolic rate, while having more muscle increases your calorie needs by increasing your basal metabolic rate.
  • Activity. Exercise helps you burn calories, and build and maintain muscle mass. Any physical activity is better than none. Start slow, and gradually work your way up to incorporating both aerobic exercise and strength training into your routine.

Losing IQ Points, Fat Freezing Belt Review

Have you ever felt dumber just by reading something that got your attention? I’m reasonably sure I lost a few IQ points by checking out this advertisement for the Fat Freezing Belt.

Look, I will admit to not being a rocket scientist, nor an astrophysicist, but I do have a pretty good knowledge of nutrition, physical fitness and how to successfully and permanently remove body fat. And I guarantee you, this stupid belt is not going to do it for you. I am still trying to cypher which is the bigger con, magic powders that promise to increase your metabolism, or this damn belt. It is pretty much a  coin toss when it comes to how ludicrous these things are.

How this belt allegedly works.

They have ice packs that you place in your freezer until they are completely frozen, then you place these ice packs in the belt and put it on your body. If you really want to try this for yourself before buying one of these worthless belts, simply make a few ice packs to wear from things you already have in your freezer. Notice how they are vague in answering the question?

Typically, spot reduction of fat is not possible. However, if you have a medical procedure that will actually do this, you should consider that your overall body fat is still going to be an issue for you. For instance, if you are working on a little tummy bulge, is it going to help your appearance to also neglect your butt?

 While it is true there has been some buzz about procedures called CoolScultping, or cryolipolysis, this product which basically claims to do the same thing is not the same thing when you are attempting to freeze your body fat at home with ice packs in a belt. What you need to know is that if you are more than a little bit over weight, this procedure is not for you. The ideal candidate is already close to their ideal body weight, but has stubborn, pinchable areas of fat that are difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. Cryolipolysis also doesn’t target visceral fat, so it won’t improve your overall health, and neither will this “Fat Freezing” belt.  At best, this product might be something a professional bodybuilder might find limited use from. But face it, most people are not pro bodybuilders, and have far too much bodyfat for this waste of money to be of any use.

Attempting CoolSculpting at home is not only ineffective, but also potentially dangerous. Do it yourself cryolipolysis often involves ice cubes or other frozen materials in an effort to freeze fat cells. However, applying ice packs at home leaves you with the risk of only freezing your skin and doesn’t get rid of any fat cells. Seriously, if you want to know if cryolipolysis is right for you, go see a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon for a free consultation. It’s also important to note that this procedure isn’t a substitute for healthy lifestyle habits. Cryolipolysis only gets rid of targeted areas of fat that haven’t responded to diet and exercise.

Squat Magic Review

Just when you think worthless gym equipment cannot get any dumber, along comes Squat Magic!

Please, if you think this worthless contraption is worth your hard earned cash, and that it will give you good results, raise your right hand.

Is your hand raised?

Good, now take that raised right hand and slap some sense back into your noggin!

Toned, tightly lifted butt and shapely legs in a 30 day challenge?

These shysters are counting on your naivete in their marketing scheme. If your butt and legs are not already in decent shape, they are not going to look that great in 30 days either, at least not with Squat Magic.

Surely, as long as you follow all of their instruction guides, you will get that nice booty, right?

This could almost be funny, if they were not actually robbing their customer base.

Results may vary, no kidding!

If the woman in the picture used this thing and did their 30 day challenge, I think she better get her money back.

Why Squats?

Each and every one of the reasons given above are all valid reasons one should consider squatting. Squatting is the “King of all Exercises” for a good and valid reason.  I make it a point to always include squatting as a part of my strength training programs. However, the Squat Magic is not going to provide benefit to much of anyone. It might be suitable for one who is immobile in helping them achieve the ability to stand up and sit down without assistance. But I see no validity for using it in order to give you a nice derriere and legs. It just is not going to work.

Benefits of proper squatting:

Squats build the gluteus maximus. This is the largest muscle on the human body and is responsible for a large portion of our power production. The gluteus medius and minimus are also strengthened from squatting, which aid in our lower body strength and stability. 

The squat also builds upon our quads which are composed of four major muscles: Vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and rectus femoris. These muscles help support leg extension and protect the knee from instability and poor patella tracking.

Of course, another great benefit of proper squatting is they build upon your core strength. I’m talking about the whole torso as the core, not just your abdominal muscles. When you’re holding weight and moving through multiple planes of motion, the body has to work hard to remain stable and not fall over. This in return strengthens the core as a whole, which includes the lower back, inner spinal stabilizers, mid back, obliques, and abdominal musculature.

Squatting will cause you to increase lean muscle mass on your entire body. The more lean muscle mass we have, the more calories we burn during the day. Since the squat strengthens multiple large muscle groups at once and requires a ton of energy to properly execute; we’re increasing the amount of calories we burn during a workout with squats, as opposed to something more static (relatively speaking). Plus, the majority of calories burned from working out come after the actual lifting. Since squats require ample energy and effort, the body will be working harder and longer post-workout to repair itself, which increases total energy expenditure.  Lastly, a good many lower body injuries when moving can be linked to imbalances and weaknesses. The squat can help remedy a lot of these like weak hamstrings or hip instability.

What you actually get with the Squat Magic:

What you are getting is a spring loaded stool that uses the weight of your body to press down the seat when you “squat” down, and then that spring tension propels your body back up. I want you to think about this – how beneficial is a seat that uses a spring to control your descent and then when you are in a full squat position, it springs you back up with very little effort of your own?

The only resistance provided is that which assists you in not dropping too fast when you are squatting down. How much muscle activation do you think you can actually get from this?

A properly executed squat is a dynamic strength training exercise that requires several muscles in your upper and lower body to work together simultaneously. Many of these muscles help power you through daily tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, bending, or carrying heavy loads. For best results, you need the resistance of weight. The Squat Magic according to their video essentially reduces your total body weight by about 60% when using it. Unless you have been totally immobile, you need at least the weight of your body or more to actually do you some good. The only caveat to this would be if you are overweight and cannot squat down and back up at your current weight. Sadly, if you are in this type of shape, you are not going to have a nice butt or legs after 30 days of using this contraption. No, it is going to be months, possibly years before you can achieve those kinds of results, and the effort is going to have to also include a nutritionally healthy lifestyle.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Please, save your money, it is too hard to come by for some of you. There are much better things you can do with $120.00 than to spend it on a worthless piece of fitness equipment. You can always do “Air” Squats to begin with. The beautiful thing about Air squats are they are free and can be executed anywhere.

The Air Squat is the most basic type of squat and simply uses just your body weight for resistance. Variations of the squat as you progress can include weights, like barbells or dumbbells, resistance bands, or yoga balls.

To do a basic squat:

  1. Start with your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart.
  2. Keep your chest up, engage your abdominals, and shift your weight onto your heels as you push your hips back into a sitting position.
  3. Lower your hips until your thighs are parallel or almost parallel to the floor.
  4. You should feel the squat in your thighs and glutes.
  5. Pause with your knees over, but not beyond, your toes.
  6. Exhale and push back up to the starting position.

You can benefit many muscle groups by doing 50 squats a day: Try doing 25 in the morning and 25 at night. As you get stronger, add 25 to the afternoon. If you want to add a little bit of weight, do them with light dumbbells or water filled milk jugs held in your hands.

 

 

Waist Trimming Belts Waste Your Money!

I swear, I have come to believe these waist trimming belts were invented by vampires for vampires, they just will not die a natural death and go away permanently. I’m actually not sure when these stupid things were invented, but I can remember seeing them all over the place as early as the 1980’s.

There are two types of people these belts are marketed for:

Competitive bodybuilders and the hopelessly gullible.

Which one are you?

Being real here, if you are a competitive bodybuilder, then these belts will come in handy when you are leaning out just before a competition. However, most of you reading this are not competitive bodybuilders and have zero reason to waste your money on these useless belts, which at best, only give a slight and very temporary improvement in your appearance. And then, only if you are just a few pounds overweight.

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

This old adage definitely applies to trimmer belts, which are worn around the midsection to allegedly melt away belly fat. Unfortunately, wearing something around any area of the body won’t help you lose weight. They do not work even when combined with topical products such as these pictured below:

 For lack of a better term, these waist trimmer belts are basically elastic corsets, which have been around for at least five centuries. For daily wear, or prior to your workouts, you wrap it snugly around your waist in order to trap in heat. Theoretically, the increase of your body temperature allegedly leads to better weight-loss results, according to the manufacturers. The problem is, these manufacturers are full of crap.

From an actual marketing ad:

  • DOUBLE ADJUSTED COMPRESSION STRAPS: Dual adjustable closure provide a big size range(L 34-38inch/ XL 40-48inch) and the strong stickiness can effectively prevent waist trimmer move and slip down from your waist. Strengthen and Tighten Abdominal Muscles. Greatly burns your fat and accelerates your metabolism.
Water weight loss is NOT the same thing as fat loss. Heat, aka feeling overly warm because you’re wearing a rubber corset doesn’t help you increase your metabolic rate or burn more calories. In fact, becoming overheated while exercising is not healthy for you, I don’t recommend it. You’ll lose your excess stored fat if you consume fewer calories each day than you burn each day, consistently
  • WIDENING DESIGN & POSTURE IMPROVING: Wider than generic waist trainer, more coverage area concerned about obese people.
If you are obese, your first concern needs to be in adopting a wholesome and healthy diet that is free of added sugars and processed foods.

No matter what any of these shysters might tell you about their product, any difference you see on the scale is going to be the result of a loss in water weight only. These devices will keep body heat in, however, this increase in temperature does nothing to encourage the burning of calories or fat. All that you are going to accomplish by wearing these trimmer belts will be you will just perspire more. This perspiration only results in  you losing fluids, and nothing more. Once you drink something after your workout, the scale will likely return to your original weight. The net effect is little different than stepping onto your bathroom scale after you have voided your bladder. How the Shake Weight allegedly works:

According to the Shake Weight advertisements, it works by what they refer to as “dynamic inertia”. whatever the hell that means. The weight bounces off the ends of the handle by the spring as the gullible user shakes it back and forth, or up and down. The dummy user performs this shaking motion in various positions to target the major muscles of the upper body, such as those in the chest, shoulders, and arms. I can feel the pump right now!

The movement of the device is generated by the user and is not battery powered. Basically, it moves only when you shake it.

Getting real about this piece of junk as a weight training or fitness tool:

It is a universal truth that in order for a muscle to be fully stimulated, resistance must be applied through a full range of motion.

The Shake Weight does not deliver this and will not result in the same muscular activity as traditional dumbbell exercise, despite what the company claims.

Another couple problems with this piece of junk is you cannot add additional weight to the device and it offers very limited exercises.

A muscle improves when it is continually challenged with increased resistance and targeted with a variety of exercises. Therefore, very little (if any) results should be expected with the Shake Weight.

The company claims that the Shake Weight for women will result in lean muscle, which implies fat loss, while it claims that men will experience an increase in muscle mass.

No matter if you are male or female, if you are looking to “tone” or build lean muscle, your diet has to be spot on with your caloric intake and macronutrient needs!

This is true no matter your level of fitness or body type!

The Shake Weight workout program is only 6 minutes in duration and is not enough exercise for anyone to actually burn a significant amount of fat.

Nor is there enough weight to increase muscle mass on anyone! Good lord, it takes more than 6 minutes for a newbie to fitness to even get warmed up. Additionally, it takes at least 20 minutes of exercise in the heart rate zone for fat burning before you even begin burning your body fat.

The gimmicky words “Dynamic Inertia” concept may sound unique and complex, but it is neither. “Dynamic” and “inertia” are two terms used to describe movement. Based on this concept, all forms of resistance training involve dynamic inertia.

The simple truth is, you will get a greater range of movement through traditional weight training. You need to understand before using this piece of junk, the shaking motion of the device is not a natural movement and may cause muscle spasms that could lead to injury.

The Shake Weight is not entirely useless!

You might turn it on end and use it as a doorstop, much like the picture below.

The Shake Weight could be a perfect kitchen mallet for tenderizing meat!

It could be used as a handy dandy, makeshift anchor for your kayak.

I created a new series titled “Worthless Fitness Equipment” with the sole intent of helping people to avoid spending their hard earned cash on pieces of junk that will allegedly help them to build a fitter and trimmer body. If you are a serous fitness buff, you already know that these contraptions are worth about as much as a bucket of sail boat fuel, but these items are not being marketed to you. These pieces of junk are being marketed to those who are lacking in knowledge of physical fitness. These marketing schemers are solely interested in their profits above all and could not care less about the health and fitness of their consumer market. If they did care, they would create items that have actual utility.

They are taking their customers for fools!

No, you are not going to transform your body with this piece of junk in only “minutes a day”! 

Please, when you see anything that tells you that you can transform your body in only minutes a day, by all means, avoid it. Physical fitness, requires dedication that spans a far greater divide than “minutes a day”. Physical fitness requires dedication to a new lifestyle that involves a good amount of effort and time coupled with good nutritional habits. “Minutes a day” are not going to get you there unless you are some type of genetic outlier. If you believe this contraption can get you into the best shape of your life, I have a bridge to sell you. The only problem is my integrity will not allow me to let it go…

I can guarantee you, if the gentleman above is driving a golf ball another 30 yards, it is because he is working on his stroke out on the course.

They claim Andy lost 17 pounds and 14 inches and that Dave lost 19 pounds and 23 inches. These claims are an outright insult to the intelligence for anyone who can think. These two gentlemen may have lost weight while using the OYO gym contraption, but the most important aspect can be found in the small print, their weight loss was through diet.

I have never heard of any mathematical formula to figure how many inches you might lose for each pound of body weight, but it appears these crooks are working numbers in some manner for your consumption. I want to put this into perspective, when I was at my largest and strongest as a power lifter, I was 70 pounds heavier than I am now. Because the excess weight was beginning to take a toll on my health despite being stronger than I had ever been in my life, I dropped those 70 extra pounds, and only took about 12 inches off my my torso. At the ages of these two gentlemen, if they had lost all those inches as claimed, you can bet they would have visible loose skin.

Yes, resistance training will do what they claim below;

However, you are not going to be accomplishing much of the above with this thing, especially once you have discovered for yourself it is not all it is cracked up to be and it winds up gathering dust in the back corner of a closet.

Of course they give you a number of exercises to do;

But, the reality is, almost all of these exercises they tell you about can be done with your body weight only as they are little more than calisthenic exercises with a bit of expensive resistance added for effect.

They have another option that will cost you about $125 too!

The bottom line is your money can be better spent on a pair of light dumbbells for a fraction of the cost.  The OYO gives you the option of either squeezing the thing together in different fashions, or pulling the lines apart. You will find that with limited movements, you are likely to at best, develop muscle and strength imbalances, especially if you only use it for “minutes a day” as they state. It would take you several hours to actually get a good workout with this if you want to actually improve your body in both looks and fitness. I have to say, every time I see advertisements pop up for this, all I can think is it appears someone added some resistance lines to an old Thigh Master they found in the trash somewhere.

They also tell you that you can essentially sit back and the machine will do most of the work for you. These bold claims could not get any more absurd, you could easily think this junk is more of a gag gift than something that is allegedly supposed to be serious fitness gear. But, they would not be still in business if there were no customers buying them.

Let’s be real, there are few people now days who actually have visible ab muscles, which should tell you just how hard it is to get them. There is a bit of truth in the italicized claims, however, they are greatly exaggerated. Which I will address next.

Perhaps what is most revolutionary about BionicGym is it requires less willpower.  Or at least a different type of will-power.  At intense levels you still get all the body’s signalling that it is intense exercise but you can distract yourself by watching TV, etc.

Many forms of exercise require constant mental-effort to complete. For example, when using an exercise bike or treadmill, a person must choose to keep pushing themselves. If they are mentally fatigued, they often can’t exercise for long.

However, stimulated shivering via BionicGym is different. As electrical impulses trigger the legs to move repeatedly, users can simply put BionicGym on, dial up the intensity, and via a kind of remote-control exercise, watch their legs move. This makes it possible to do passive exercise while engaged in another activity – like watching TV or playing a computer game. This also means that many normal environments, from working at a desk to lying on a couch, can become places where exercise can occur.

This company is marketing their gadget to people who are lacking willpower. It is in their own words above. It takes willpower coupled with good nutrition and true exercise to achieve a fit and trim body. Even if one who might be a bit lazy and lacking in will power decides to use this gadget, it is going to be a distraction to their TV watching if the intensity is set very high. After all, it is shocking the hell out of your legs.

The most important thing stated, which is really kind of glossed over in their ad is the line, “Diet PLUS exercise = weight control”.

Not many people can out exercise a bad diet even with vigorous activity. Your nutrition is always key to having a healthy, fit and trim body.

It is a universal truth that abs are “made in the kitchen”.

Can I sell you a bridge?

Look, gullible or desperate people are being sold a bunch of hooey when they are told they can build and tone muscle while burning fat with these scam gadgets. Think about this, yes they do work to stimulate muscles electrically and you will feel them tingling and contracting. But his really means little to you, snake oil might have made people feel better in the moment too. However, you can take a frog that has recently died, hook it up to a muscle stimulator and you can see his dead muscles twitch too. These people are playing on your lack of basic knowledge when they sell these gadgets.

Electrical muscle stimulators are used in physiotherapy for only two uses:

1. To help people re-strengthen injured areas not to burn fat or tone muscle effortlessly. To strengthen weak muscles, the key is to be actively exercising the muscle while the machine is on. The muscle stimulator must be synchronized with your active movement in order to be effective. Physiotherapists have used this principle extensively since the 1940’s and the Russians used it in the 1970’s with their weight training athletes. For example, a weight would be placed on the ankle and the stimulator pads are placed on the front of the thigh (quadriceps muscle). The person then straightens their knee making their muscle contract while the stimulator works on the quadriceps muscle also making the muscle work. By working the muscle along with the stimulator there will be an enhanced strengthening effect.

2. Muscle stimulators are also used to help with pain and muscle spasm relief. Physiotherapists will use them on the back muscles for example to help reduce muscle tension and spasm. They are set to go on for 10 seconds and off for 10 seconds. This repeated contraction and relaxation of the muscles tells the brain to relax the muscles and kill the tension. They are often used in combination with heat which has a great relaxing effect. A muscle stimulator is really a specialized form of TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator). As well as causing muscles to release their tension, a muscle stimulator will also reduce pain. It sends electrical signals through the nerves to the brain which helps to release endorphins and block pain signals. Endorphins are your body’s own natural pain killers, fifty times more powerful than morphine.

Is there any actual use for electronic muscle stimulators?

Per the FDA; While an EMS device may be able to temporarily strengthen, tone or firm a muscle, no EMS devices have been cleared at this time for weight loss, girth reduction, or for obtaining “rock hard” abs. Electric muscle stimulators are federally regulated devices most often used in physical therapy. The majority of these stimulators are administered by a health care professional to ensure proper use and safety for rehabilitation purposes. However, you will sometimes see where professional athletes have incorporated them into their fitness programs, but most of us are not professional athletes. The benefits of EMS have been discussed extensively in theory but the real challenge is the successful incorporation of EMS into a training program. EMS works best as the last training element of the day, separated from other work by at least two hours. You are not going to get the results you might want if you are just sitting on the couch with the dream of getting stronger. The use of EMS is used in conjunction with other strength programs and is not a stand alone program in itself.
